Say No! Take The Gadgets Away From Your Children

Smartphones and other handheld devices have really improved how life is today. These devices make our work/lives simpler and have greatly impacted how we communicate with our peers, friends and family. The same can however not be said for young children, especially those under the age of 16. Most pediatricians are of the vote that, young children shouldn’t be allowed to use these devices as they are believed to have a negative effect on the child’s growth. Discussed below are several reasons to support this;

1.    Brain growth

The human brain takes between 16 – 21 years to grow and mature completely. The most crucial part of the brain growth takes place between 0 and 3 years of an infant’s growth. This is many catapulted by environmental stimulus, and this plays a major role in how receptive the child’s brain will be in the future. Children with increases exposure to handheld devices have shown remarkable signs of impulsivity, lack attention and some even suffer from impaired learning.

2.    Body and brain development

Games are as addictive to children as they are on adults. A child who spends most of his/her time playing with handheld devices lacks body exercise and other natural activities. A child’s body needs regular exercise for improved blood circulation and stronger limps, and handheld devices seems to be taking these away. It is for this reason why most children suffer from obesity, aren’t sociable and have mood swings due to lack of body exercise.

3.    Sleep Deprivation and mental distress

Handheld devices come with games that are addictive to children. These children spend hours and hours playing these games at night, and this leads to sleep deprivation. Sleep is a primal requirement in every child?s growth as it facilitates healthy development of brain cells. Sleep deprived children do not perform in class, and most of them suffer from depression at a very tender age. Other disorders related to sleep deprivation include autism, mental illnesses and bipolar disorders.

4.    Aggression, addiction and digital dementia

A child who is exposed to violent materials in movies and games tend to lead and aggressive life. The child becomes addicted to such like violent games, and the devices become his/her best friend. Under most circumstances, this child will detach from parents and other children. The worst case scenario is when the child starts suffering from digital dementia due to decreased concentration and memory loss. Such child cannot pay attention in class or in the field for more than 5 minutes, and this is detrimental to his/her life to come.

5.    Radiation

Almost all handheld devices today have touchscreens that light up by the touch. The light radiated from this screen is destructive to the child’s tender eye tissues, and any increased use of the same cause’s long or short sightedness among most children. The worst even happens if the child is using an internet enabled device. Such devices radiate radio frequencies that can destroy the child’s brain cells if exposed for long.

These are just but a few of the reasons why you shouldn’t leave your child exposed to handheld devices. This can be done by restricting access to the devices, or banning use of the same altogether.

Instead, give them educational toys that could help them develop their curiosity and intelligence so you can help them to be better persons in the future. Here is the link to our Educational Toys and Games Section: Link!

Things To Consider When Buying A Smartphone For Your Child

There is a huge debate about buying smartphones for children. We have some people that will tell you that it is a really bad idea. Their main argument is that they did not have a smartphone when they were young and the child does not need one. This is definitely a bad argument. If you find it that your life is incomplete without your smartphone, the child should also receive one.

The real problem is that it can be a little complicated to choose such a phone for a child. We are faced with a huge diversity and it is quite obvious that some of the phones will be too advanced for the child to actually make proper use of them. However, there are even cases in which a really complex phone is a great idea. Everything boils down to what the child could use and what he/she likes. As the number of smartphone users is growing, let us see how we can have the child join the trend by thinking about the factors that we would need to consider.

Available Budget

It is obvious that we need to think about the money that is available. In the event that we do not have enough money, we should contact the carrier. There may be special deals that include new phones for new contracts or extensions. This is a great way to buy a brand new smartphone at low prices. However, in this case you would need to teach the child about the responsibility of not using the phone too much. In most situations a pre-paid SIM card with a fully purchased unlocked phone is better.

The Child’s Technical Literacy

Do not underestimate how good your child is with gadgets. If he has a computer or an Xbox, there is a pretty good possibility that he will quickly learn how to use the phone better than you do. Children do learn faster than us. However, this does not mean that you should just offer the newest gadget with the best features in the event that your child needs to be taught how to dial a phone number.

Why You Buy The Smartphone

Children are well known for not caring about items that they receive. This may be different with a smartphone but you still need to offer the device as some sort of reward for something that was done properly, maybe for good grades or for getting a scholarship. This teaches the child that he/she gets rewarded when doing some things.

Where You Buy From

This is particularly important when you do not work with a carrier for a phone discount based on a subscription. Try to find the best deals that are available but remember the fact that some of the stores offer more quality than others. It is smart to buy online because the price tags are great, especially when referring to accessories. You can thus save some money and still get your child the smartphone that he/she wants.
